Progress

Week #1
I have decided on doing a Pinhole Camera for my Physics Project. I am going to make my black box based on the size of the needle. I am still figuring the math out, but I can use the converter to help me start making my box.

A pinhole is a simple camera that is a closed box. There is a pinhole on one side and photo paper on the other, and the light comes in and goes onto the paper creating an image. It then has to be dipped into different chemicals to finalize the picture.

A pinhole camera works because it can focus light coming from any direction, while only allowing light to come in through the small opening. It then comes in only one direction from a particular source. The camera creates images by blocking instead of focusing light which makes the image darker and upside down.

I am using a .62 mm needle which will give me optimal focal length of 216 mm.

This is the diagram I will be using to help me build my box.

Week #2
Here is a picture of my completed Pinhole Camera box. I spent the entire week measuring and building it. I taped over the electrical tape on the outside with Duck Tape to keep it from peeling off. What I did was put the sides around the base, and not on top. I then put my actual pinhole on the top of the box because the lid is resting on top which gave me the ideal focal length of 216 mm. The total dimensions of the finished box are 229.5 mm in length, 153.3 mm in width, and 216.45 mm tall (with the lid the length is 230.4 mm and the width is 154.2 mm).

I was able to take and develop one picture on Friday, and it didn't turn out great. I found out that I need to keep the lens open for more time (I did 50 seconds) and I'm going to try going outside to help let more light in, also.

I also learned the solutions and how they work for the pictures. You start off with Dektol Black & White which helps bring out where the light has been applied on the paper and this is where your image starts to appear. The Stop Bath does what it says, it stops your image from continuing to develop. The Fixer basically helps preserve the photo so that it doesn't fade or have other issues.

Week #3

This week is going to be the time where I start to perfect the amount of time that the light can come in, the best lighting, and all the little details to be able to get the best pictures possible. I was able to take two pictures today by increasing the time I have the lens open from 50 second (from last week) to 1 minute and 25 seconds and 1 minute and 30 seconds. For both of my pictures I went outside to get a better lighting, and it was cloudy outside (not any direct sun; clouds totally covered sky). My first picture came out very clear and I'm very happy with how it turned out. Throughout this week I have figured that the light needs to be coming in anywhere from 1 minute and 30 seconds to 1 minute and 50 seconds, depending on how sunny it is outside. I found that trying to take a picture inside does not work very well because you need to leave it open for a substantial amount of time so that the paper has enough light to react with. I need to find a flat place where I can just set my box down and let it be because a lot of my pictures are coming out a little blurry because I bumped them part way through.

Picture of in front of school
    -1 minute and 30 seconds
    -Overcast
-Happy with picture, can see lots of detail

Picture of parking lot by football field
    -1 minute and 25 seconds
    -Overcast
-Happy with contrast of colors, just blurry

Picture of Rotunda (Cafeteria)
    -1 minute 30 seconds
    -Overcast
-Blurry and original was dark, but when inverted became sort of light
-Want more contrast, need more exposure time

Picture of Holland Christian Sign
    -1 minute 50 seconds
    -Sunny
-Happy with picture, can see lots of detail (Picture was wavy, so it distorted image when uploading)

Picture of Wall (by 40th Street)
    -1 minute and 40 seconds
    -Sunny
-Blurry and original was light, but when inverted became really dark

Week #4
Last week, I was able to get the amount of light exposure figured out for whether or not it's sunny, cloudy, or not very bright at all. I have learned that when taking picture I need to find a flat surface, so that there is little to no chance of me accidentally bumping my box.

Picture of parking lot
    -1 minute and 30 seconds
    -Sunny
-Happy with picture, good contrast in cars

Picture of Visitor Parking Lot and entrance
    -1 minute and 25 second
    -Sunny
-Pretty happy with picture, decent contrast of building and landscaping

Picture of sidewalk on Ottawa Avenue
    -1 minute and 35 seconds
    -Sunny with some clouds
-Really happy with contrast and the detail that can be seen
-Got a big white spot on original, black when inverted (I think that the whole thing just didn't react because it looks like different layers)

Picture of football field through fence
-1 minute and 25 seconds
-Sunny with some clouds
-Very happy with picture, both fence and background have good detail

Picture of pond between high school and middle school
-1 minute and 50 seconds
-Sun was rising, caused round lens flare
-Original was kind of dark, causing the inverted to be a little light
-Pretty happy with how it turned out, detail in background

Picture of house
-1 minute 35 seconds
-Picture was directly in sun, causing lens flare
-Original was kind of dark, causing the inverted to be a little light
-Pretty happy with the detail in the background

Picture of 40th Street
-1 minute 30 seconds
-Sunny outside
-Happy with detail, but has this weird thing in the right

Picture of Mrs. Boorsma's Panda Mug
-1 minute and 25 seconds
-Very bright outside
-Very happy with detail, contrast is really good

Picture of looking upwards in tree
-1 minute and 40 seconds
-Mostly sunny with some clouds
-Not happy with how it turned out, was windy and box moved

Picture of Cafeteria
-45 seconds
-Cloudy outside
-Camera was blown by wind and then I bumped it, so I ended it making the original kind of light, and causing the inverted to be dark
-Not too happy with picture, top has ok detail

Picture of Maroon Express trailer
-1 minute and 25 seconds
-Sunny outside
-Original was kind of dark, causing the inverted to be a little light
-Not too happy with picture, has ok detail

Picture of Rotunda and light posts
-1 minute and 30 seconds
-Sunny with some clouds
-Really happy with contrast and details

Week #5
Last week, I was able to get some really good pictures. This week I was able to get some special effect pictures and finish getting my good pictures.

I was able to get the amount of light exposure figured out for whether or not it's sunny, cloudy, or not very bright at all. I have learned that when taking picture I need to find a flat surface, so that there is little to no chance of me accidentally bumping my box.

Picture of Bush
-1 minute and 20 seconds
-Sunny outside
-Used two pinholes which let in a lot more light, so time should've been even shorter
-Not extremely happy with picture, but was experimenting with the two pinholes so not bad for first time

Picture of Corner of 40th Street and Ottawa Avenue
-1 minute and 25 seconds
-Very sunny outside
-Taped a piece of paper, in shape of a triangle, to the photo paper so that the area wouldn't react
-Happy with picture, has good detail and triangle is very defined

Picture of Greenhouse
-1 minute and 35 seconds
-Sunny with only a few clouds
-Very happy with the contrast of the picture and the detail that can be seen, not inside and outside of the greenhouse

Picture of Tree
-1 minute and 35 seconds
-Sunny with clouds, a little windy
-Happy with how it turned out (since it was windy, leaves were blowing in the wind a little bit)

Picture of area between Science room and Administration Office
-1 minute and 30 seconds
-Sunny with only a few clouds
-Taped a piece of paper, in shape of a circle, to the photo paper so that the area wouldn't react
-Happy with picture, has good detail and circle is very defined

Picture of School Bus
-1 minute and 30 seconds
-Sunny outside with a few clouds
-Put tape in shape of a square on photo paper to see how it would react
-Happy with how picture turned out

Picture of Arch thing
-1 minute and 35 seconds
-Cloudy outside
-Taped a square of wax paper with center cut out
-Happy with detail, and how light was able to go through wax paper, just made it a little blurry

Picture of Tree
-1 minute and 40 seconds total
-Very sunny outside
-Took a picture of a tree for 50 seconds, closed pinhole, and took a picture of the same tree for another 50 seconds with box flipped around
-Fairly happy, tree has pretty good detail but either I didn't put the box in the exact same spot or my pinhole is slightly off-centered so the tree trunks don't quite line up (which is disappointing)

Picture of Front Entrance
-1 minute and 30 seconds
-Very sunny outside
-Taped a piece of paper, in a special design, to the photo paper so that the area wouldn't react
-Fairly happy, picture is a little bit blurry but has decent contrast

Picture of Bike
-1 minute and 25 seconds
-Sunny outside, but really windy
-Taped a piece of paper towel around photo to create a frame around it
-Not happy with the picture, but wind moved box and I couldn't put it back in the exact spot

Picture of Parking Lot
-1 minute and 30 seconds
-Sunny outside with some clouds and wind
-Katie stood in one spot for 15 seconds, then moved and stood for 30 seconds, and then moved again and stood for 45 seconds
-Not too happy with picture, blurry but contrast is pretty good, need to have Katie stand in a place for longer amounts of time

Picture of Fence and trees by Rotunda
-1 minute and 30 seconds for the fence and 1 minute and 25 seconds for the trees
-Sunny when we took picture of trees and cloudy when we took picture of the fence
-Covered middle circle and took picture of fence, and then covered everything around circle and took picture of trees
-Happy with how it turned out, contrast is good on both pictures but a little light on the trees and a little blurry on the fence, but overall good
